Beyond Ourselves

How much of what we do is out of a desire for personal gain or safety? Neither of which are intrinsically wrong or bad, it just depends how much you use your ends to justify your means. If you desire to have a safe and comfortable home for you and your family are you willing to do this by stealing someone else’s home? Well of course not, but there are small and less obvious means we might use to get what we want, and therein lies the rub. Self gratification and self preservation are intricately necessary for babies to be able to survive. However scale that up into adults and you get viciousness, maybe cloaked in manipulation, maybe delivered sweetly but essentially making ourselves win by making others lose.

As adults we are meant to grow from self gratification and self preservation to the love expressed in 1 Corthians 13, and the fruit of Galatians 5:22.

I think God wants us to go beyond ourselves in everything we do. He makes us creative, he makes us think redemptively, he wants to take us beyond ourselves and into his Kingdom.
